Sex in the City - is it wrong?

This weeks ‘Church Reaction’ goes to a church in the city of Melbourne. Apparently a car wash has opened where for $10 you get a female car wash attendant wash your car….in a bikini. Well it was a cold day for the news report so they were in tank tops and shorts.

I pondered the issues. A girl can rub sun lotion on her body at St Kilda Beach but not suds on a car further inland. It’s funny what a difference a bikini outside its natural environment can make. Ok so it’s probably more than that…but if a bikini girl did walk down a city street she would be thought inappropriate yet on a beach she’d be lucky to be noticed.

Perhaps the issue is more from a feminist perspective. On the beach you don’t have permission to oogle, but if she’s washing your car you’ve paid for the privilege. So is the issue simply discouraging the idea of sensuality? I’m not sure. The news report said that the girls hired were also ‘dancers’ but you wouldn’t know that unless you were told.

Perhaps the issue is children? The area did not appear suburban but there would be a chance that high school kids would see. But see what? Their world view is still forming so whatever conclusions they make will be normalized for them at this stage.

Its always the way that whenever a brothel, or in this case a skimpy car wash is situated, the church is consulted for an opinion. The reporters already know the response and need a controversy. Pity though, that this is all we seem to be good for these days.

So what’s your response. Do you think sensuality is wrong? How would you respond to this car wash in your city?
